Airport transfer fares from Sandwich, Kent: how your fixed price is set

Start with where the car should come to: a street and postcode, a house name on the Bay, the clubhouse at Royal St George's or Prince's, The Bell Hotel, the station, or the building you are visiting at Discovery Park. Then add the airport and terminal, the flight date and time, how many people are travelling and how much luggage, counting golf bags separately from suitcases.

The car follows from the luggage. A saloon seats four with two big cases; an estate takes three or four big cases; an executive saloon seats four with two or three; and a party of five or six needs the MPV, which carries six people and four or more large cases.

Nothing about the road changes your fare. With no meter running, a queue at the Dartford approach, a closure on the M2 or a diversion round roadworks costs you nothing more, and the hour does not matter either: a 3am start, a late return, a Saturday or a bank holiday is priced like any other day.

A few extras can be added if they happen: waiting beyond the free allowance (three-quarters of an hour from an international touchdown, half an hour from a domestic one, ten minutes at a home address), a stop you add, a large change of route requested during the journey, and parking or tolls met on the way. Near Sandwich the likely ones are the Bay estate's entry charge, the Dartford Crossing between 6am and 10pm on Stansted and Luton runs, and the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel charge towards London City.

Plans changed? Cancelling more than a day ahead is free. Inside 24 hours but more than 6, up to 50% may be charged; inside 6 hours, or once the car has set off, the whole fare may be payable.

There are no fare zones. A flat inside the walls, a house on the estate, a lane outside Eastry and a cottage on the A257 near Wingham each get their own quote, worked out from the address itself. Woodnesborough, Worth, Ash, Staple and Preston are priced the same way.

If the car cannot stop outside, because the street is narrow or the house sits up a private drive, add a note to the booking and a pickup spot close by is fixed in advance.

Name the terminal in your booking. At Gatwick that means North or South, with a free shuttle between them that runs day and night and takes about two minutes; at Heathrow it is 2, 3, 4 or 5. Stansted has one terminal.

On the way home, the car is timed to the moment your plane actually lands, not the timetable, at no extra cost. A driver holding your name is waiting inside arrivals, and the journey ends at your front door, hotel, clubhouse or office reception back in Sandwich, Kent.
