Sandwich, Kent to Heathrow by airport transfer: terminals, timing and arrivals

Heathrow is on the opposite side of London from Sandwich, Kent, so a Sandwich to Heathrow airport transfer takes longer than the run to Gatwick or London City. Express Travel Kent publishes a typical time of 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes from a Sandwich address to the terminal.

Whether you live in CT13 and have a long-haul flight to catch, or you are flying in from abroad for a round at Royal St George's or Prince's, the questions are much the same: which way the car goes, which terminal to name, how early to leave and where to find the driver when you land.

The road from Sandwich, Kent to Heathrow

The car leaves town on the A256 or the A257 and joins the A2, then the M2 across north Kent to the M25. For Heathrow it takes the M25 west, around the southern half of London, to the airport junctions on the far side.

That long stretch of orbital motorway is where the journey time is most likely to change, which is why the published range is half an hour wide. The fare does not move with it: it is fixed for the car when you book.

Prince's Golf Club gives Heathrow as 105 miles from the club, with Royal St George's its neighbour on the same stretch of shore, so for golfers this is the longest of the usual airport legs.

Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5

Heathrow's passenger terminals are numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5. Your airline and ticket decide which you use, so check before booking and give it to us; on a return trip the arrival terminal may differ from the departure one, and each leg is planned for its own building.

Heathrow charges every vehicle that enters its terminal drop-off areas, payable online or by phone by midnight the next day, and nobody may wait or pick up there. Like other parking fees and tolls met on a journey, that charge can be added to the fare where it applies.

Leaving Sandwich for a long-haul departure

Long-haul flights often want you at bag drop earlier than short European hops, so find your airline's cut-off first. Then take the top of the typical range, 2 hours 30 minutes, and add a margin for overnight roadworks on the M2 and M25 or a Friday afternoon queue.

A worked example: for a 10am departure with bag drop closing at 9am, aim to reach the terminal by 8.30am. Counting back the full typical range plus half an hour of margin gives a pickup around 5.30am. Tell us your flight time when you book and we will suggest a time that fits it.

If you are leaving from the station or from a hotel in town, give that as the pickup point. Sandwich station has no taxi rank, so name the entrance you will use.

Arriving at Heathrow and heading for Sandwich, Kent

Give us the flight number and the arrival terminal. The flight is tracked from departure and the collection is timed to its real landing, so an early arrival or a long delay is absorbed without any extra cost to you for a delay you could not help.

Because Heathrow allows no pick-ups in its drop-off areas, collections are made from the terminal car parks. Your driver comes into the arrivals hall to meet you with your name on a board, helps with the luggage and walks with you to the car.

After a night flight, a couple of hours in the back of a car is a gentle way to finish the trip. You can sleep through the M25 and wake up close to the Stour, at the address you gave.

Golfers and Discovery Park visitors landing at Heathrow

A group flying in with clubs should tell us exactly how many golf bags and suitcases are coming. The fleet runs from a saloon with room for two large cases up to an MPV that takes six people and four or more, and a larger party may be happier split across two cars that leave together.

Business visitors heading for Discovery Park can give the company and building as the destination. The driver takes you to that reception, and the return to Heathrow can be booked at the same time.

Which car for the Heathrow run

Choose by luggage rather than by headcount alone. Every class seats up to four except the MPV, which seats six:

  • Saloon: up to 4 passengers and 2 large cases, fine for a couple with a case each
  • Estate: up to 4 passengers and 3 to 4 large cases, for families or longer trips
  • Executive: up to 4 passengers and 2 to 3 large cases, for business or a more comfortable ride
  • MPV: up to 6 passengers and 4 or more large cases, for groups and golf parties

Once confirmed, the price holds whatever the motorways are doing and at any hour. It can only grow if the trip changes: extra waiting beyond the free 45 minutes after an international landing, a stop you add, a large detour you request, or tolls and parking on the route. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before pickup.

Common Questions

Questions travellers ask

The published typical range is 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes. Quiet roads help, but overnight roadworks on the M2 and M25 can slow a night run, so the suggested pickup keeps a margin.

Yes. Give both terminals when you book; the outbound drop and the return collection are each planned for the right building.

It is Heathrow's charge on the vehicle. Like parking fees and tolls on a journey, it can be added to the fare where it applies; ask when you book if you want to know how your trip is affected.

Yes. The driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, then walks you to the car in the terminal car park.
