Stansted, Luton and London City all lie north of the Thames, so every one of these trips from Sandwich, Kent has to cross the river somewhere. The crossing shapes the route, the time and, in the daytime, the tolls.
Typical times, as Express Travel Kent publishes them for a Sandwich address: London City 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes, Stansted 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes, and Luton 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. Here is what a Sandwich to Stansted airport transfer involves, and how the other two compare.
Crossing the Thames: Dartford and the tunnels
For Stansted and Luton the car crosses at Dartford. The Dartford Crossing is charged between 6am and 10pm, with payment due by midnight the day after; overnight it costs nothing.
For London City the usual way is up the A2 to the Blackwall Tunnel or the Silvertown Tunnel beside it. Both charge from 6am to 10pm, with peak rates at the busiest times, and nothing overnight.
These are tolls on the journey. They can be added to the fare where your route and the time of day bring them into play, while the fare for the drive is fixed before you book and does not change with traffic.
Sandwich to Stansted: the M11 route
From Sandwich the car takes the A2 and M2 to the M25, crosses at Dartford, then follows the M11 north before the short A120 link into the airport.
Stansted works from a single terminal, which keeps the drop simple: you are set down outside Departures in the Express Set Down area, a barrierless zone paid online after the visit. For collections the airport points cars to its Green and Blue Short Stay car parks, and the driver meets you in arrivals and walks you there.
For a dawn departure the arithmetic is simple. A 6am flight with bag drop closing an hour before means reaching the terminal by about 4.45am, so a pickup in Sandwich soon after 2am, when the Dartford Crossing is not charging.
Coming back late in the evening works in your favour too: after 10pm the crossing is free again, although overnight roadworks can still close a carriageway on the M11 or the M25.
Sandwich to Luton: the longest of the five
Luton is the farthest London airport from Sandwich, Kent, at a typical 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. After Dartford the car stays on the M25 to the M1 and heads north to the airport.
The terminal has a signposted Drop Off and Pick Up Zone close to the building, charged for every visit with a 30-minute maximum stay and paid online by midnight the following day. The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, linked to the terminal by a shuttle bus.
Because it is the longest run, Luton is where an early start matters most. If your airline flies the same route from Stansted or Gatwick, compare the drive before you buy the ticket.
Sandwich to London City: Docklands in under two hours
London City is level with Gatwick as the quickest airport from Sandwich, at a typical 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. It sits in east London's Docklands, near Canary Wharf and the City.
Cars can set passengers down in front of the terminal building but may not wait on the forecourt, and the drop-off zone has a 10-minute maximum stay. Collections use the airport's Pick Up Area, where the car waits while your driver meets you.
For a short European business trip, or a visitor heading for Discovery Park, the shorter drive can make London City the easiest of the three. With one terminal building, the drop and the pickup are always at the same place, so there is no terminal to get wrong.
Choosing between the three

- Stansted: 2h – 2h 30m, over the Dartford Crossing and up the M11
- Luton: 2h 15m – 2h 45m, over the Dartford Crossing and up the M1
